Simple and Affordable
If you are looking for a reliable, functional, simple to use and affordable router, look no more since Cisco Linksys E1000 is just the thing you need. This Wireless-N router will enable you to connect multiple devices in only a few easy installation steps and thus speed up your wireless network. If you are no expert when it comes to router settings, the stock Cisco Connect software is there to assist you in more than one way – it will help you navigate through both basic and advanced settings, create a separate network for your guests (where it is up to you whether you are going to protect it with a password or not) and control the time you children spend online or block their access to certain websites via Parental Controls.
The installation process is pretty straightforward – all you need to do is follow a few simple instructions: simply insert the installation CD (which is included in the package), click set up, click next once you’ve read the License Agreement, follow the connection steps, wait a few moments until the set up process is complete and click OK.
Linksys E100 offers a 2.4 GHz band, two internal antennas, four Ethernet ports, but no USB port unfortunately, so if you want to enjoy this feature as well, you better opt for some more advanced router from the Cisco Linksys series. Out of the box it is compatible with Windows and Mac and comes with a Installation Guide, Ethernet network cable, Energy Star power adapter and a one year limited warranty.
As in all Cisco Linksys routers, they took care of your security by including some interesting safety features like the WPA2 which will encrypt information on a wireless network, a functional firewall which will prevent unauthorized router access and so called NAT technology. For more advanced security and VPN options, you will have to flash your router and upgrade it to DD-WRT router.
As mentioned, if you expect and need more from your router, you can always opt for upgrading it to a DD-WRT router, which is not as complicated as it seems. Once you have carried on the so called “flashing”, you will be able to enjoy additional features, apart from those your router can provide.
Although Cisco Linksys E1000 includes some previously explained security options, internet safety is always an issue and usually requires more than one layer of protection. Well, such layer could be gained with Virtual Private Network (VPN), which will hide your IP address and encrypt the information going through the Internet (or any other public network) so it becomes unreadable for potential hackers.
The first step is always choosing your VPN provider. One option is HMA! Pro VPN which offers a reliable and wide service regarding all popular VPN features. Once you have chosen your VPN provider, you will need to follow the instructions for upgrading your router to a DD-WRT. Once the upgrade process is done, you will enable VPN protocols (OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP) pass-through the routers firewall.
Another option is purchasing an already flashed router from Flashrouters.com, meaning that they will do all the work for you and enable you to fully enjoy all the advantages of an upgraded router.
The DD-WRT Linksys E1000 FlashRouter arrives pre-installed with a recent, tested, stable DD-WRT firmware build. Forget spending hours deciphering the DD-WRT forums/website/Wiki for the correct hardware version and proper build only to discover that you’ve improperly flashed your device and bricked it. Each FlashRouter arrives at your doorstep with a personalized setup guide that is e.g. tailored to HideMyAss! VPN service.
Supported VPN Protocols
• L2TP, and
• openVPN (which we heartily recommend)
Basically, your choice in routers will solely depend on your demands and needs, but if you want a simple, reliable device for your home or apartment and you are not willing to pay too much money, this could be just the thing you need. For wider spaces and faster connectivity, you are probably better of with E3000 which includes dual bands or even E4200, since it include Ethernet Gigabit.
E1000 deserves 3.6 stars out of 5!
Regardless of your choice, upgrading your router to DD-WRT is always a good idea due to all the benefits VPN can provide.
