Asus RT-N16 — Elegance and pure power
Asus RT-N16 is yet another fantastic router coming from Asus’ router branch. Unlike the previously reviewed Asus routers, this b, g and n spec wireless router can easily speed up to 300Mbps whilst integrating the features of a NAS (Network Attached Storage). It has 2 USB ports, meaning that you can attach any USB hard drive or thumb drive, thus making a fully functional NAS device. And that’s not all — you can even load a printer driver and make a Wireless Network Printer out of your regular USB printer.
This router has 128 MiB of RAM, 32 MiB ready for flash and 480 MHz of CPU power. 3 external detachable antennas are just an extra treat!
As with just about any other Asus router nowadays, you’ll need to flash it with a proper DD-WRT firmware. Stock firmware cannot run an openVPN client by default.
On the other hand, flashing process is definitely straightforward when using Asus Firmware Restoration Tool. To learn more about flashing in general, please visit my How to configure a DD-WRT router page. For a RT-N16 guide, you can look at the following page: official dd-wrt Wiki page for RT-N16.
If you’re not sure about the flashing process, you can even buy a pre-flashed router directly from FlashRouters.com.
Unique VPN features
Asus RT-N16 works exceptionally well with either PPTP, L2TP or openVPN protocol. When it comes to speed and stability, I ‘d suggest openVPN UDP protocol. Recently, HMA Team announced DD-WRT auto-installer script for openVPN. Asus RT-N16 with Big 14896 (You can find it here: dd-wrt.v24-14896_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin) version of DD-WRT firmware is fully supported.
Inside the HMA control panel you can find the option called “DD-WRT Routers“. Follow the instructions provided and proceed with the auto-installer wizard. When you complete the tutorial, apply the settings and reboot the VPN router, wait for a moment and you should certainly be connected to a VPN server.
The procedure is really simple and works each and every time.
Asus RT-N16 is both elegant and powerful at the same time. Robust, sturdy and stable, this router will keep all your devices connected and secured.
If you don’t mind running a third party firmware, then for the $100, this router provides many features which you might actually expect. On the other hand, if you are looking for establishing a wireless network easily without any hard work then it is better to contact HMA support and ask for guidance.
Our verdict: Asus RT-N16 deserves 4.9 stars out of 5.
It’s a great router and definitely worth every cent. If you purchase it, you won’t regret it! Remember, you will need and account with HideMyAss in order to connect to the VPN.
