Power and versatility
If you are looking for a Wireless-N router perfect for either your home or even small office and you expect stable and strong signal with some interesting features able to please even the most advanced users, D-Link DIR-825 is just the thing you need.
The product is the latest revelation coming from D-link laboratory, offering four Gigabit LAN ports, one Gigabit WAN port and an USB port, two external dual band antennas and advanced security including firewall features (like NAT and SPI technology and VPN pass-through), Wi-Fi protected access and protected setup.
DIR-825 VPN router maintains the sleek and elegant look of D-link routers, consisting of a white case combined with some black up front and on the sides. Two external antennas are placed in the rear of the router, separated by the power connector, USB and WAN connectors, four Ethernet ports and the reset button. Up front you can check your WAN connections shown by flickering blue LED lights and also broadcast bands and LAN links. Another useful indicator is the Wi-Fi Protect Setup which allows you to adjust security for WPS devices connections.
You should not experience any trouble installing the device since it comes with the Quick Setup software that will get the system running in the matter of minutes with only a few mouse clicks. An alternative is using the Web-based interface instead, which has proven to be a bit more responsive than the setup wizard.
Probably the most talked about feature of D-Link DIR-825 is the SharePort utility (which needs to be installed, but you should have no trouble doing so), allowing the USB port to serve as a networked port. This basically means that you will be able to, not only connect external hard drives and printers, but also share any USB device over the network, since your computer will recognize the device which has been plugged into the router as if it were plugged directly into the computer USB port. However, the only problem is that only one computer will be able to access the plugged-in device at a time. Another good thing with the USB port is that it supports 3G USB adapter, meaning that the router will also work as a mobile router.
Security and VPN features
As in all Wireless-N routers which we have been reviewing (click to read more reviews and compare products), there is also the possibility of upgrading your D-Link DIR-825 to a DD-WRT router. A good thing is that, besides some traditional advantages of a “flashed” router, the external antennas can be upgraded to high-gain antennas, proving wider coverage and a stronger signal.
Now, having a DD-WRT router also means having a good platform for different VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP. Further on, this means that you will gain an additional level of protection for your data flowing over the Internet, but also some other interesting options, like access to geo-locked services all over the world. Namely, VPN (http://vpnfor.us/about-vpn/) will allow you to access live video-streaming and enjoy some football game or your favourite show, while upgraded DIR-825 5GHz band will be the channel for qualitative streaming video services.
To make your life easier and save you some time in both trying to choose the best VPN provider but also upgrade your router to DD-WRT router, we would suggest you go for HMA! Pro VPN and enjoy all the benefits of having a reliable and a professional service.
Also, instead of trying to understand all those complicated terms and procedures, just order an already flashed out-of-the-box router from FlashRouters. Problem solved.
Supported VPN Protocols
• L2TP, and
• openVPN (recommended)
Now, to sum things up! D-Link DIR-825 router comes at a very reasonable price ($150 USD at the time of writing), offers some very useful features and a stable and overall good performance. If this is not quite enough for you, you can always upgrade its firmware yourself or just order a pre-flashed router and add some interesting features like the VPN military grade Wireless security, video streaming from abroad and IP address masking.
E2000 deserves 4.3 stars out of 5!
